Willmar Social Circus

Willmar Social Circus was a community-based project that used playful circus arts, such as juggling, balancing, acrobatics, and group challenges, to support personal and social growth. The goal is not simply to learn circus skills, but to create a welcoming space where students can build confidence, trust, creativity, communication, and connection with others.

Circus skills rarely work on the first attempt. Through practice, students learn how to manage and overcome frustration, learn from mistakes, persist through challenges, and build resilience as they experience their own progress. The methodology helps them understand that mistakes are part of learning and that success often comes from patience, effort, and trying again.

Purpose Artisans partnered with Willmar Community Education, Woodland Centers, PACT for Families (PACT4), and Dream Academy to develop and carry out the project. The experience was made possible through funding from the Willmar Community Foundation and included intensive facilitator training (Benjamin Domask-Ruh), pilot workshops, ongoing reflection, and adjustments based on what participants and facilitators learned.

During 2025 and 2026, the project worked with students from Dream Academy and concluded with a community presentation at New London Little Theatre. The work continues beyond the original project, as PACT4 now incorporates the social-circus methodology into its ongoing work with youth.

By bringing together art, movement, play, and relationship-building, Willmar Social Circus demonstrates how circus can become a practical tool for inclusion, wellbeing, belonging, and positive community change.
